Importing your client list from a spreadsheet

Already got your clients in a spreadsheet, another job platform, or with your accountant? You don't have to type them into Sammy one by one. Upload the file and Sammy will bring the whole list in at once.

Sammy accepts CSV and Excel files (.csv, .xlsx or .xls), up to 10MB and 5,000 rows.

How to import

  1. Go to Clients
  2. Tap Import CSV
  3. Drop your file in, or click to browse for it
  4. Sammy reads your file and matches your columns automatically — things like name, company, email, phone and address
  5. Check the column matching looks right. You can change any of them, and the preview at the bottom shows exactly how the first few clients will come in
  6. Tap Import

That's it. Your clients appear in the list straight away.

What columns can I include?

Sammy looks for these — you don't need all of them, and they can be named however your file names them:

  • Contact name — the person's name, either in one column or split into first name and last name
  • Company — the business name, if the client is a company
  • Email
  • Phone
  • Address — one column, or split across street, suburb, state and postcode
  • ABN

Every client needs at least a name or a company — rows with neither are skipped.

Not sure how to lay out your file?

Any layout works — Sammy matches your columns for you. But if you're starting from scratch, tap CSV template in the import screen to download a ready-made file with the right columns and a couple of example rows. Fill it in, save it, and upload it.

Exports from other tools (Xero, ServiceM8, Tradify, Excel and the like) usually import without any editing.

Will it create duplicates?

No. Any row whose email matches a client already in Sammy is skipped, so you can safely import the same list twice — or import an updated export later — without doubling up your client book. After the import, Sammy tells you how many clients came in and how many were skipped.

One thing to note: rows without an email can't be matched this way, so if you import the same no-email client twice you'll get two entries. Easy to tidy up from the Clients page if it happens.

A few tips

  • Put your column names in the first row of the file — that's how Sammy knows what each column is
  • If a client is a company with a contact person, include both — Sammy stores the company as the business name and the person as the contact
  • Rows with an invalid email still import, just without the email
  • Using Xero? The Import from Xero button brings your Xero contacts in directly — no spreadsheet needed
